  • What nice treat!
Ross of Ottawaundefined Ross of Ottawa

What nice treat! Elderly Italian couple neighbours with a set of plum trees dropped off a tray of plums for us. A little small this year he says, but apparently tasty.

I offered some tomatoes in return, but felt a little silly, as I know the local Italian community is big into growing tomatoes. Sure enough they are overloaded with them too.

Wah – working away in the backyard turned to see a fox going past on the other side of the garden.

I've seen them before on the edge of the city's greenbelt but not here in the middle of town. Maybe it was him that was trying to dig under our shed. Concrete pavers blocking that now.

More appropriate for a premium product would've been an immediate replacement shipped to me and the old one factory refurbished and resold as such.

Update on my six month old #dewalt drill that developed a directional instability.

After I finally found their customer service their help was just to point me to their local service centre. So I had to drive across town to bring it in. It was still under warranty and today I picked up the repaired item after a motor and switch replacement.

Glad it was repaired, but disappointed that it failed and that they didn't make warranty coverage more effortless.

  • Yum!
Ross of Ottawaundefined Ross of Ottawa

Yum! Best use I know of for a fresh garden tomato, is a Caprese salad.

It's mozzarella di bufala, with some garden basil and then a drizzle of balsamic and olive oil.

  • I've long wanted one of those crude but durable quilted moving blankets for use in the #workshop.

Further to my ponderings yesterday, I got a couple of utility/moving blankets for the workshop. They're roughly 1m x 2m (40" x 72") in size and were shipped with crazy unnecessary overnight delivery.

Anyway they look fine for my intended purpose. They are getting a cat scan as I type this.

We haven't tried it before, but I always enjoy pronouncing the punctuation properly whenever we see it.

If I were to splurge for a perfect product it would be quilted canvas w recycled cotton fibre inside perhaps. I see a few like that, but I'm not sure I'd want to pay top dollar for a fancy one that will get light usage.

A first application will be for my thrift-store guitar repair use. That'll give me a sense of whether the low/mid end product is decent or not.

Thanks for tuning in to my thinking-out-loud session.

Got something like that in your #workshop or #craft area? Impressions?

Searching a bit, I see the economy end of that market is made up of non-woven quilted blankets whose fabric looks a bit like landscape fabric, or that stuff on the underside your couch/sofa/chesterfield.

That might be okay. A key metric is the weight, and I see that often quoted as lbs/dz or pounds per dozen on the big evil site. They range from 20 to 60 lbs/dz.

So a good heavy weight would seem to be about 2kg each, which sounds nice for my purpose.

I figure it would be great on a workbench when you're working on a delicate thing, or something with a finish to protect. Also good as padding for a new thing you're assembling. A variety of other uses probably?

I typically use some clean, fresh cardboard for that now, which is okay - can be a bit slippery.

I have a bit of canvas too, but it's not padded unless folded a lot.

Just a quick look at the local #Ottawa Covid-in-wastewater data.

It's certainly not a decisive measure, but another data point to consider along with updates we hear in the news, which consist mostly of anecdotal tidbits.

  • Interesting potential 2pm inflection point in #uspoli.
Ross of Ottawaundefined Ross of Ottawa

It's fun to speculate, as the world continues to crumble.

Likely possibilities would seem to be:

    a) he shows up as normal, and the whole thing was a stunt to disrupt Epstein questions
    b) he shows and is a mess, spokesperson says "wow, he's perfect," media ignores situation
    c) Spokes tries to downplay with: "oh he's in hospital for a perfectly ordinary issue" eg appendicitis or plantar fasciitis.

(There's also the tiny chance of a spontaneous worldwide party, so keep your calendar open.)

Interesting potential 2pm inflection point in #uspoli.

Will he appear? Will it be cancelled?
    Sitting or standing?
Will he be pumped up with stimulants and a broom stick up the back of his jacket?

Will he be as incoherent as usual, or worse?

Fifty bucks to anyone who yells "Epstein on line two for you sir" and see if he replies "I have to take this."

  • Trying to figure out tariffs for sending into the US was non functional on the Canada Post site, it will give me a code number for the class of goods but no estimate of duties.
Ross of Ottawaundefined Ross of Ottawa

…I guess, being an Android App to pre-pay US tariffs through the app before shipping, that would mean Google gets a cut of that payment too.

So – I'm not going to ship my little gizmos to USA anymore. I'd have to charge 5-10x the price (typically about $3 each) just to make it worth my while for time spent with extra apps, accounts and junk.

I'm guessing this mess will all go away in a few months (or years?).

@GustavinoBevilacqua They will get your goods to the US, but they'll fight the customer who wants to pick them up.

Ross of Ottawaundefined Ross of Ottawa

So I need to change my product pages to charge US customers perhaps 40-50% more to compensate for the effort.

I need to get the Zonos app, set up an account and payment method, enter order details, pay the 35% duty, then go to the post office (where they already get easily confused by QR-codes for pre-configured shipping) and show them yet another QR code and then I can ship.

I guess many makers will just be removing the sell-to-USA option from our operation.
