@elena A normie with let me check again 19 federated accounts, and five of them self-hosted .
There's much to learn, but I believe enough people around here will happily answer your questions :).

If you continue to fall in the self-hosting rabbit hole with so many VPS might be worth to look at tools such as Ansible or PyInfra.
It's a heavy investment upfront, but it's a nice way to be able to setup new VPS quickly (won't bring back the data without backup ) and it's a nice documentation of what you did when you look at it six months later :).
