OVH reactivated my VPSโ
Yes even I didn't see this coming.
I had a couple of people working there (who shall remain nameless) who reached out to me, asking if they could help. You are ANGELS! Thank you!
I got an email saying that following an internal investigation my VPS was "automatically suspended" due to a manipulation on my part that could have been involuntary. So my service is restored for now but if I repeat the same mistake, it will be suspended for good.
Do I want to resume using it after what happened? Yes.
Why? Not so much for the 30 Euros I paid for it, but for something else:
I can't think of a better motivation to be SUPER SUPER careful with my security settings. The stakes are high now!
And TBH I had been a little careless/superficial in the past when it comes to firewalls and such.
So Fedi friends, now I have FOUR VPSs ๐คชโ
Maybe I could use the Hetzner one to learn #FreeBSD after all.
And sorry but I need to rush back to the OVH VPS to uninstall Docker ASAP.
Life can be so strange.
Thank you to the OVH angels (you know who you are) who helped out.
And special thanks to all the people who offered me GRACE and advice. I'm hoping not to fumble things so badly the second time around.

#MySoCalledSudoLife@elena I don't know. If it takes the privilege of having the compassion of the people who work at OVH to help you be treated with respect, perhaps it isn't the best long-term hosting option. Next time, you might not be so lucky and could lose N months or even years of data.

@placebo I hear you, but for reference this VPS is only for testing purposes. I won't have anything important on it.
I have 2 other VPSs (active for 9 months now) with another provider hosting essential stuff for me.
Since I know nothing about Docker, I wanted to isolate the experience in case I did anything dumb. Like what happened... I'm glad I didn't compromise with my actions some real important VPSs for me. It would have been catastrophic -
@leonieke yeah tell me about it. I want some calm now

#MySoCalledSudoLife@elena nice
If you continue to fall in the self-hosting rabbit hole with so many VPS might be worth to look at tools such as Ansible or PyInfra.
It's a heavy investment upfront, but it's a nice way to be able to setup new VPS quickly (won't bring back the data without backup) and it's a nice documentation of what you did when you look at it six months later :).
Anyway good luck ^^.

@Timshel thank you for the advice! maybe one day... I feel like I should put in my bio "I KNOW NOTHING, thank you for your patience and grace" --- because 90% of this stuff goes over my head.
But hey I just changed the listening port for my VPS and it feels like I developed a superpower (well after the initial panic of not being able to log in).
Please people remember I'm just a normie who copies and pastes lines of code and says a little prayer, hoping things will work outโ

@elena A normie with let me check again 19 federated accounts, and five of them self-hosted
.
There's much to learn, but I believe enough people around here will happily answer your questions :). -

#MySoCalledSudoLife@elena So, did they explain to you what did trigger that suspension ?
I've heard of similar responses by people who mistakenly had a DHCP server working on their public IP, but nothing about docker yet

#MySoCalledSudoLife@elena Well, in my view, if you're not allowed to change a setting, don't allow you to change the setting. I.e. if anyone is to blame, it's them, not you.

@madalex I left the TLS certs in the root folder, thus failing to protect the daemon !!
