Is genocide justification against your server's rules?
Hey, all. Relatively low responses on this, which was interesting. I think there might be a few reasons for that; one is the understanding of what genocide justification is, and the other is unfamiliarity with our own server rules. Or maybe it's just not an interesting topic to people.

My answer would be yes, but. Yes, but it's not entirely clear. We do have a prohibition on Holocaust denial, which is great, as well as promotion of violence, totalitarianism, and hateful imagery.

I have seen quite a few posts justifying the genocide in Gaza -- not denying its existence, but defending it morally. Usually the poster links the population of Gaza with Hamas, either because of the election in 2006 or because of Gazans' support for Hamas now. Sometimes people talk about terrorism, or hatred of Israelis. In any event, civilian deaths and starvation are defended because there's something wrong with the victims. This is genocide justification.

I try to report these posts when they come up; I hope more people do.

@wjmaggos it's uncomfortable to me that you consider the genocide of Palestinian people as an acceptable topic of debate. I don't think you'd have those discussions about genocide of other groups of people.
if I say there is a genocide happening in Gaza (and I do) but somebody else on my server says it is not and that they support the IDF activities, should I consider that a violation of such a rule? I would rather continue to argue with them about it than kick them off etc. same with maybe every other topic.
if they are on my server and are just assholes re Palestinians or any other group, they need to go.
if somebody says posting the DEATH TO THE IDF video is antisemitic, what do we do?
-
@wjmaggos I don't think there's a valid debate about whether there should be a genocide in Gaza; like the WP article says, "According to modern international criminal law, there can be no excuse for genocide."
Black People and anything connected with us is debated all over the world. Most people never discuss the rights of gay or disabled people whichis a bigger problem.
I'm pro Palestinian but you shouldn't have compared the suffering of one group to the suffering of other groups.
I'm muting you.
Do better.

@audubonballroon @wjmaggos I said that genocide of Palestinians is as unacceptable a topic as genocide of other people, and listed three examples.
I don't think that was comparing anyone's experiences. All peoples deserve not to be eradicated. That's the point of having prohibitions on genocide.
Regardless, I went back and changed the text so it doesn't mention any particular peoples.

@wjmaggos "if I say there is a genocide happening in Gaza (and I do) but somebody else on my server says it is not and that they support the IDF activities, should I consider that a violation of such a rule? "
No. That is genocide denial, not genocide justification. Justification is when people accept that a genocide is taking place, but they claim there's some reason that it is necessary.
"if somebody says posting the DEATH TO THE IDF video is antisemitic, what do we do?"
Is that relevant?
-
I think that's covered by "no eliminiationist rhetoric", yeah.
@TerryHancock that would do it.

ok but my point is they are justifying the same shit, something I consider genocide.
it's kinda relevant imo because I think different people honestly think different things are hateful and should be unacceptable. and in my experience, it is criticism of Israel where the left tends to draw the line differently. we're generally quick to say that comments that upset other groups should not be tolerated, but I think we're different re comments re Israel that some Jews consider antisemitic.

@wjmaggos so, I think we are both in agreement on most issues. I think you're holding the door open for engagement, and I applaud you for it. I don't have the ability to do that.
