Well-connected person whom I trust was just telling me that he’s personally talked to 4 Canadians who in recent weeks have had US CBP demand to look through their phones and on the basis of phone content been turned back and handed 5-year entry bans.

Three of the 4 were at Vancouver airport. These people are not taking their story to media because they don’t want to draw attention to their employers.

@timbray
You haven't been clear about whether they were refused entry because of what was on their phones, or because they declined to hand them over.The former is probably the case. If so, then do you know what was on their phones that led CBP to deny entry? What does it appear CBP was looking for?

@mpjgregoire Updated the entry, it was the phone content or what it pointed to. One needn’t think too hard to come up with the kind of content they were looking for.

@timbray What springs immediately to mind is anti-Trump posts on Mastodon.
But I hope it needs to be more than that...

@mpjgregoire @timbray last time I passed through the US by plane, I wiped all the social and messaging apps off my phone. I think for my next trip, I'll do a fresh OS install on one of the previous-generation Android phones I've got in various drawers here at home. It might be worth it to keep a "clean" phone and Chromebook just for travel to the US.

@evan @mpjgregoire @timbray you can wipe your devices but you should never lie to them

@evan @mpjgregoire @timbray That is already taken to be suspicious, but I’m sure a naked Trump from that South Park episode as your Lock Screen would go over well

@evan @mpjgregoire @timbray but I think you have to declare your social media accounts, right?
I'm starting to be cautious about what I put on Mastodon as "public". Political stuff as public is ok for me (I do not need to enter the US). But more personal, identifying stuff: followers only or private.
