Phage therapies are incredibly promising. By embracing bacteriophages in veterinary settings, we can limit the development of antibiotic resistance and even treat resistant infections.

Bacteriophages also have excellent potential when it comes to protecting crops, allowing us to continue minimizing labor w/ monocultures

The FDA allows phage therapies for animals and plants, but these biologics are not yet approved in humans

New medical technology can be more easily developed in a veterinary context, while still advancing human health goals. That said, there are paths forward to bring phage therapies to humans, allowing us to better deal with challenging bacterial pathogens.

mRNA therapies are now being developed for veterinary uses, which greatly benefits and accelerates the field. That said, bacteriophages can also be used to deliver vaccines / antigens:

Bacteriophages can be a critical part of a holistic strategy for sustainable development. More generally, agroecology is necessary for continued human thriving.
Holistic approaches to human health are also necessary to avoid disruptive crises such as COVID. While I would love everyone to become vegan and eliminate the environmental & health costs imposed by our system of factory farming, embracing holistic approaches can limit risks & enhance health technology.

Integrative approaches to public health will be critical going forward. One must view human health and immunity holistically: when America pulls back from our campaigns against pathogens like Tuberculosis in the global south, we create a space in which dangerous evolutionary developments can occur. We're ALL better off for eliminating polio around the world. That pathogen can no longer evolve & change & tax our society in so so many ways.

While mRNA technology can rapidly respond to developing threats, prevention is far more effective & efficient. Additionally, maintaining capacity for defense purposes is not feasible when you consider the scale and diversity of potential biological attacks — effective strategic competition requires POSITIVE engagement, not simple aggression which threatens to pull us into an escalatory race to the bottom.
Bring back USAID. It boosts national security & is moral.

Fungal infections can be incredibly difficult to treat, in part because they're difficult to target with current therapies — fungi are more molecularly similar to animals than bacteria are, so small-molecule therapies which do not harm the animal host are difficult to come by. That said, mycoviruses are viruses which DO target fungi. These viruses have potential therapeutic uses in humans and agriculture, just like bacteriophages.

As global warming leads more fungi to adapt to living at temperatures found in the human body, it is thought that fungal infections may become more pervasive

Developing mycoviral therapy technology now will help protect us & our food systems in this changing world

Ecological approaches to health are critical for the prevention of future crises. By developing technologies to protect our food system, we can accelerate their development for humans
