What is with very practical and work-oriented apps asking if I *enjoy* using them. Literally no one experiences joy checking their tickets. There is not a single work tool I would spend a second longer using than is actually required, and the highest praise I ever have for such apps is that they’re efficient.

Just a reminder, given some recent public comments

Does it bother anyone else that a “leap second” adds a second but a “leap year” adds a day?

LOL I just found out that one of the other teams here has a very pro-AI manager who said they don’t need to hire junior devs anymore because code assistants are “basically as good and cost far less”

So the juniors had AI code up all their stories for a sprint, but then did their own work without AI in another branch, blinded their senior peers to which branch was which, and had them rate the code. I know who won, by a lot.

Now I’m waiting to see what that lead says

There is a huge difference between media that promotes, normalizes, or apologizes (in the sense of apologists) terrible things; and media which merely *depicts* those things.

A book set in the time of slavery will likely have slavery in it. Pro-slavery characters likely exist in that book, and they will say pro-slavery things. That doesn’t automatically make that book or author ok with slavery.

Making the character sympathetic doesn’t change that either. Complex characters are realistic. There’s a huge difference between a character that’s trying to evoke “the guy is basically likable and trying to do what we want him to in the plot, but holy shit does he have some bad points” and one that’s trying to make us be ok with the bad things.

The world is messy, people are complicated and weird, it’s ok for media to reflect that.

It’s always great when random neurotypical people assume that explaining how something unfortunate works must be an act of support for that thing

If MS and Google could please start only quoting emails when you’re forwarding or adding a new recipient on a reply, that would be lovely.

Your mental health must take priority over small contributions to the greater good. Not just because “put your mask on before helping others,” but also because it is the correct ethical choice.

Just spent about three weeks improving performance of an RDBMS-backed app. Identified slowest common ORM operations and hand-wrote SQL instead. 63% perf improvement. Got a proper DBA involved, added another 9 points.

app-DB average perv improved by 71%, est. client savings ~$85k/mo. 3 wks of programmer time and 1 wk of DBA time, and a few other things (scale testing etc. are expensive); billed $240k for the project. ROI in under 3 months.

But “machine time is cheaper than dev time”, right?

Your art is not *lesser* if you chose to make it just because you thought it would be cool, or interesting, or just pretty.

Making art to challenge people or make a social or political point is of course still valid. I want to be very clear that it’s absolutely ok for art to be weird and political and uncomfortable.

All I’m saying it is don’t let people convince you that other motivations for creating are are any less valid.

I have the agonizing task of talking with my trans child about how the anti-trans assholes are going to feel empowered to be extra shitty and maybe even violent because today’s school shooting was reportedly conducted by a trans person.

Because when a right winger shoots up a school, he’s just nuts; but when a trans person does it, it’s *because they’re trans*. And the rhetoric that all trans people are dangerous is already in full force.
