Making the character sympathetic doesn’t change that either. Complex characters are realistic. There’s a huge difference between a character that’s trying to evoke “the guy is basically likable and trying to do what we want him to in the plot, but holy shit does he have some bad points” and one that’s trying to make us be ok with the bad things.The world is messy, people are complicated and weird, it’s ok for media to reflect that.

So please, stop beating yourself up for not being able to be happy. It's almost certainly not because anything is wrong with you. We live in a world that constantly works to make us unhappy.It's worth fighting for your happiness. But it's also important to give yourself some grace when it doesn't work, because it's fucking HARD to fight the inertia of culture and society.

And then someone says “well since we have this data, could we use it to tell people when they’re trying to do something that would be easier with an upgrade?”And it feels off, but that also seems pretty reasonable all in all. And then they get increasingly “how do we get more value”

An adolescent can absolutely be aware of gender and sexuality in a meaningful way. They can absolutely have considered opinions about policies that affect them.They’re not yet fully adults, and they lack experience, but they damned well aren’t children either.
