Too many AI companies still take this stance as standard policy.@sjvn if only everything ever published on the web was Creative Commons!

I wrote about Anthropic's $1.5 billion class action lawsuit settlement over pirated ebooks and why I think that, bizarrely, this may count as a WIN for Anthropic https://simonwillison.net/2025/Sep/6/anthropic-settlement/@simon I don't understand. The archive won't allow access to the already-scanned books? Why are we duplicating work? This is a "licensing" thing where the dongle is a COPY OF THE ACTUAL PHYSICAL BOOK?!!?

Apple could make so much money just using their off-the-charts SOC design skills to compete with nvidia on GPUs.And do not get me started on how much Qualcomm sucks. That company is a cancer on the entire industry. If I was in charge of Qualcomm, I would raze the entire building to the ground, then salt the earth underneath so nothing could ever grow there again.

Even after all these years -- the incredible increase in trajectory started around 2014-2015 -- their in-house SOCs are VASTLY more efficient and powerful than literally everyone else in the industry. It isn't even close.

I'm not sure if other in-flight legal cases will find differently." why do this when the Internet Archive and Brewster are already doing it? Why not combine forces? I don't understand. That seems like a bad idea.

Statistically speaking, all human beings have an insatiable bloodlust for "free {service/product}".@jani "The 'free lunch' in the saying refers to the formerly common practice in American bars of offering a 'free lunch' in order to entice drinking customers." and by drinking we of course mean alcohol, e.g. drug dealing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_such_thing_as_a_free_lunch

This "typography for laywers" website is a Tufte level masterwork https://typographyforlawyers.com/straight-and-curly-quotes.htmlThe book is fantastic… but the website is arguably better. Also the fonts on offer are outstanding.
