I don't think it gets mentioned very often and in reality it isn't much of a hindrance. But I also only learned about it from the docs when I was already committed to deploying it.

It's a pure server and you need a different client app to access it (e.g. Phanpy, Elk, or one of the many mobile apps).
That is why the reply link doesn't work. There's simply no API for it, even though the server itself is mostly compatible with Mastodon, this part will never work.
