Proof that a work of art can be immaculately crafted and also bad.

I love that on m.s posts now show number of quotes but you can't quote.I love that on m.s posts now show number of quotes but you can't quote.
I understand this is just a temporary situation until they roll out the rest of the update, but it's funny.

Since I didn't like Hollow Knight but I'm being bombarded with FOMO over Silksong, I instead downloaded Ender Magnolia, which is both challenging and delightful.Oh! And I want to see if you can beat a boss entirely by perfect blocking; the game gives you several different options for parry-type builds (much better than the original in that respect).

Since I didn't like Hollow Knight but I'm being bombarded with FOMO over Silksong, I instead downloaded Ender Magnolia, which is both challenging and delightful. The ideal difficulty balance for a "hard" game for me is:
- Some mini bosses can be downloaded and fought immediately, in 1-2 tries.
- Most bosses take 3-5 attempts.
- A handful of hard bosses take 8-15 tries.
- One or two I have to grind on for much longer.Magnolia has a difficulty slider, and right now the default feels *okay*, but I might tick it up slightly depending on how things continue to go.

So far the platforming and movement are satisfying, the bosses are sufficiently hard, and the environments are beautiful (as expected).
Also, like Silksong, the customization system is a bit more sophisticated than the first game, and the story, while separate, clearly calls back to the original Ender Lilies.

Just learned that a common French expression meaning "not to care about" etymologically actually translates to "not to fuck oneself at" and I think that's beautiful.Just learned that a common French expression meaning "not to care about" etymologically actually translates to "not to fuck oneself at" and I think that's beautiful.

When kid's room is messy, they have nightmares. Also here's a question for all the second-language learners out there:
When I'm awake and fresh I can read or listen for a pretty long time and understand all/most of what's going on.
When I'm tired my capacity drops to basically zero and I fail to parse basic words.
Do you find you have the same problem?

When kid's room is messy, they have nightmares. When kid's room is messy, they have nightmares.
When kid has nightmares, they come into our room and crawl into our bed.
When kid sleeps in our bed, everyone sleeps poorly.
Solution to bad sleep: make kid clean room.
(In related news, kid's room is now clean, but I'm dozing off and it' s only 10:30 AM.)

Boot shopping today. Also men's shoes have the same design aesthetic as modern pickup trucks.
-
Boot shopping today.You might ask, "But Dana! Isn't a women's 10½ the same as a men's 9?"
No. Men's shoes typically use a wider last than women's, which means unless you wear a wide (which I typically do not) the men's shoe will have the correct length but your foot will still flop around inside.

Still too big for straight sizes, too small to wear men's.
At least I could figure out what size I am and order online.

People talking about the worst error messages in computing.People talking about the worst error messages in computing.
I can one-up you.
In grad school, I developed application software in Prolog. You'd run the program, it would think for a few minutes, and then output, simply: "No".

My wife attempted to introduce me to Practical Magic today, and, I mean, yeah, it scans that straight women weren't okay in the '90s, but wow.@blogdiva to be fair, I think it's a very different movie if it gets made today (and I'm hoping the 2026 sequel will bear this out).
I am also 100% sure that if those were two not-white women they would have just asked their aunties to deal with the problem and it would have been an entirely different movie.

My wife attempted to introduce me to Practical Magic today, and, I mean, yeah, it scans that straight women weren't okay in the '90s, but wow.But watching the movie got me thinking about all of the fantasy stories we had in the '90s, and how a lot of them were about (ostensibly) straight women with magical powers and that got me thinking about my straight friends from the '90s and it all kinda made sense.
You can feel superior to these two dingbats, but also identify with them and wish you had their ability to have the kind of power they have to solve your problems (with men or otherwise).

My wife attempted to introduce me to Practical Magic today, and, I mean, yeah, it scans that straight women weren't okay in the '90s, but wow. This was the point I could not go on because it was obvious they were gonna do (c) because these two are complete fucking dipshits.
I just wanted a cozy movie about sisters trying to raise their magical kids and deal with their aunties' meddling.
-
My wife attempted to introduce me to Practical Magic today, and, I mean, yeah, it scans that straight women weren't okay in the '90s, but wow.Do you:
(a) Dispose of the body using magic - or ask your aunts (who almost certainly have five ways to do it) to help you?(b) Take him to the nearest hospital as two incredibly attractive, distraught white women, and tell them "he was drinking and he just passed out!" knowing that they won't do a tox screen for the weird shit you gave him and even if they did they can't pin it on you?
(c) Bring him back from the dead and spend the rest of the movie dealing with Evil Zombie Abusive Ex?

My wife attempted to introduce me to Practical Magic today, and, I mean, yeah, it scans that straight women weren't okay in the '90s, but wow.So these two incredibly stupid people poison Kidman's abusive boyfriend's booze a little too hard while he's holding them hostage and he dies.
Put yourself in this situation: you're two witches with incredible power. You've got a (probably undocumented) foreigner who died after drinking _at least_ an entire bottle of hard liquor. What do you do?
