️ my adventures in #selfhosting: day 244 (Everest edition)
️
a blog post that details some of the highs and lows I have been experiencing lately in my self-hosting adventures. I have a major challenge ahead - learning #Docker - in order to take advantage of #Ghost x #ActivityPub federation. It's my new Everest 🥲:

#MySoCalledSudoLife@elena I run my Mastodon instance inside Docker. It was a handful to setup for this former SysAdmin with 13 years of experience (including 0 with Docker).
But maintenance on the other side of the hill is so much simpler.
Don’t give up

@EdwinG thank you for the encouragement!

@elena It’s also something you don’t step on accidentally in the middle of the night and yell at like a damn slaughter house. 🤪
@everydayisextra sounds like you're speaking from experience - ouch
as always, thank you for the words of encouragement. I sure need all the cheering I can get (I'd been feeling down for 2 weeks, thinking I'm back at square one) -
Docker is a convenient, efficient and versatile virtualization platform used to run containerized applications. I don't like it mostly for safety reasons. However, for applications such as forums, social media, blogs, it's more than fine.

Hello my name is Elena and I'm now the owner of 3 VPSs.
I just got a new cheap plan for 6-months to learn #Docker (on a brand new server that I can wipe if things go awry).
Fediverse what did you do to me? From 0 to 3 VPSs in 9 months.
On the bright side, this new passion is far cheaper than
Yes I sort of feel like a right now.

Hello, my name is Franz
I own one VPS and was inspired by Elena to try it out.
In my home I run another mini pc and various raspberry pis for self hosting. -

#MySoCalledSudoLife@elena inspiring! I'm very far from where you are, but I'm teaching myself CSS and HTML so I can personalize my website (running on write.as) as much as possible. Since I started diving into the Fediverse and GAFAM alternatives a few years ago, I got really interested in coding and how things work. I'm really on the surface of things still, but I find it quite empowering. So it's inspiring to read about your journey

#MySoCalledSudoLife@elena Looking forward to reading your Docker journey! I hit this same plateau but coming at it from a different direction. Was teaching myself Linux to get away from Microsoft and Apple, and virtualization/containers seemed handy and I was like "I taught myself how to replace windows on PC and how to install a custom ROM on my phone, how hard can docker or this other stuff be?" Welp, as you say, new mountain summit identified. Maybe more of a Mount Doom even. But if hobbits can climb it so can we lol. "There's good in this world Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting Docker for."

@echoingfrog thank you for sharing that!
️ if you ever need any help with web design, reach out. I’m self-taught and have been running my own sites (Wordpress) for 15+ years. Before that I made them in HTML. So even though it’s true I have 0 dev skills, I was at least familiar with CSS and HTML when I got started.
I hear wonderful things about write.as (one of the few things I haven’t tried yet). Wishing you all the best with the design / personalization of your site.

@growfediverse haha thank you!
️ I’m planning to install Docker on my VPS this morning. I’m really excited… will definitely chronicle the whole journey, all the ups and downs…
I’m even tempted to take online courses for more formal sysadmin training 🤭
