Don't shoot people but AFAICT this is how the GOP wants "gun control" to work in America.
-
but somehow you just ignore the same junk from NAS etc.
@wjmaggos @CharmingMalcontent I block every Nazi that I run into. Use a racial, ethnic, sexual, or gender slur and I block. At least I only do it person by person and not instance by instance.
-
@wjmaggos did you know that people who smoke weed can't buy or own guns? That the mentally ill can't buy and own guns. The only form of "gun control" the Right will pursue is taking all the guns away from anyone the Right deems "crazy" and with Palantir, they can probably find everyone. It'll be the perfect plan to round up all the most vulnerable people and actually do ACTUAL terrible things besides "potential suicide" to them. Yikes. Trump is half masting over this.
my goal is better policy. I posted that to try to get pro gun people to reconsider what those policies mean in reality. the anti tyranny conservatives already seem cool with masked agents grabbing people off the streets if they are brown. Trump already had consent from MAGA to do anything he comes up with cause they somehow still trust him inherently.

@wjmaggos Masks protect agents and families—same as Antifa, fully legal. “Pulling people off the street” is just normal INS/ICE practice; Obama deported 3M that way and nobody called it tyranny. Unless folks are vanishing into mass graves, this is law enforcement, not fascism. To the Right, after 4–6 years of “nobody’s home,” it just feels like rules being enforced, not tyranny.

that kind of block only helps yourself. you didn't block this guy, you called him crazy.
if you want to help those attacked by the Nazi types on fedi, I wish you'd join in my arguments that nobody should be allowed to obviously harass others. if their server admin doesn't police that shit, blocking servers makes sense or else you will get a fedi where their targets will just stop showing up.
we don't go to parties with assholes. party organizers have to choose who to invite.

the ACLU did call Obama out but the M5M ignored it. I recognize this is unfair to the right. but it shouldn't be happening, the law needs to change.

@wjmaggos I recommend you block my instance then. If you check out the block list, there are a lot of people who do.
I think you might be taking me too literally. When I said “you sound crazy,” it wasn’t a diagnosis—it’s just a casual figure of speech, like saying “that sounds wild.” I do understand your concerns about blocking, and I do block people who cross certain lines. I just try to do it person by person instead of whole instances, because I don’t want to unfairly lump people together.

if you don't allow users on your instance to harass others, your server shouldn't be blocked.
again, I'm asking you to speak out against the shitty servers, not just block randos. the "blocking too many people" issue comes down to not wanting to have the fedi be a shitty place and having too many servers that don't mind that happening. we have to approach it from both sides. tell progressives to block less servers for non harassment and conservatives to not allow users to harass.

@wjmaggos
Oh no the worst thing about me is that I'm a server of one I'm an instance of one there is only one user on Abraham.su and it is Chris at Abraham.su So if I am blocked it is only because I suck because I'm the only person on that instance I'm the only person on that server ergo if you don't just block me because you think that I am a representative of evil Russia and a water carrier for Putin based on my top level domain then it's just a me problem. -

I didn't say any of that. I not only don't block you but actually follow you.
are you trying to change the subject?

@wjmaggos @chris Another possible solution: Maybe people could stop being so fragile that any difference of opinion is taken as a personal attack and labeled as "harassment" or "hate".
I've never blocked an instance. As a rule, I don't even block people, except possibly as spam control. But maybe I've just got thicker skin than they grow on the kids these days. It comes from being born before zero tolerance and participation trophies. -

consider the way some react to being called fascist or Nazi and then add all that.

@wjmaggos @chris No, but I can relate to the struggle.
I actually always thought that I should grow up in a wealthy family, with a trust fund so I wouldn't have to work. I actually always thought I should have a 13" penis and be married to a porn star. I actually always thought that people around me should be rational and accept reality.
All of those things are true in my fantasies. Unfortunately, I live in the real world where they're not. -

@ryan @wjmaggos @admin if that's based on the audacity that most men list their heights on dating profiles you know literally 5'8 guys saying that they're six feet I believe that I believe that you have a 11 or 13 inch penis. As someone who is truly 6'3 there are a million Ferraris and Lamborghinis that I will never fit into there are a million freaking miatas that I'll never fit into I'll never be happy in a coach class seat I'll never fit in the backseat well of a taxi without moving the seat

it would suck more to be black in the Jim Crow south than it does today. I can imagine a future where it sucks less to feel trans than it does today. of course sometimes we also need to compromise like re female sports.
I think that depending on your IRL experience, depending on how public one is here and I'll note that people are much less public on freeze peach servers than most of fedi and other social media, harassment amount and how bad it is differs.

Heavily moderated servers (and corporate social media) buy the illusion of civility at the cost of conformity of thought. If you are okay with having your thoughts suppressed, or if you already think in lockstep with the censors, you're probably fine with that. But if you're an independent thinker, that kind of thought-censorship is infinitely worse than enduring a few f-bombs.
(I say "illusion of civility" because many admins of heavily-moderated instances are totally cool with any level of hate, as long as it's directed at the "right" people) -

(I say "illusion of civility" because many admins of heavily-moderated instances are totally cool with any level of hate, as long as it's directed at the "right" people)we can find a better middle ground. like having some government but not too much government. we do it IRL all the time. and it's not a few F bombs but harassment of some people from some groups more than others. and the proof that it's a problem is how few people on freeze peach servers are anonymous, even compared to fedi servers with lots of tech privacy obsessives.
I agree re your last paragraph. it's unfair but you can see how it keeps normie conservatives off bluesky.

@wjmaggos @chris
Possible tangent, but one problem I see with any of the moderation strategies is that the definition of the word "harassment" is far too subjective.
As far as I understand, something is harassment if the reader feels harassed by it. A speaker has no control over what the reader feels, and therefore cannot with any certainty avoid "harassing" anyone who could possibly see the message.
This leads to a strong chilling effect on speech, which is easy to see in practice in any space with a strict "no harassment" policy. Again, you might be okay with that, but it's hardly an open marketplace of ideas.
If we're going to set rules, they need to be more prescriptive and less reactive.
